Ah, overcrowded classrooms and staff that should never have been allowed near children, let alone teach them................. that sounds more like my school, Stephen!!
Morning all, it's very wet here again.
Cath........... a map!!! Men don't need maps or instructions for anything, or so they think!!
Shelly, I hope we'll be getting photos of the special day.
Pat, we had those inkwells at school as well, I thought it was great when I got a cartridge pen for my birthday one year. The school pens were a piece of wood with a nib on the end.

Stephen
I attended Church of England Schools. we had one strick teacher Mrs O Sullvian the others were very fair. when we had our Religious instructions in the mornings the Vicar came from our little church.of St Marys.to take the service.
Later when I went onto the Girls school we had assembly the Catholic Girls filed into a seperate class room where the Priest had come to give them their mass. while we stayed in the Hall and had our Vicar come. This was in the 40's we had quiet a few Catholic Girls at the school even though there were at least three Catholic school nearby.

Bad Teachers or just Wicked Persons ?
One particularly nasty teacher was the Aunt of my Best Man. She had the occassion to visit my home when I was married, the purpose of which now escapes me.
My dog, a well trained German Shepherd, normally had a wee sniff at visitors and then lay down again.
He snarled and growled at this woman and had her literally pinned in a corner. I called him down and he lay in his usual place but never took his eyes off her. Now and again he would give a deep throaty growl.
Yep ! Animals have a great instinct.

Maddie,
It's called indoctrination or...... as the Military call it...... Brain Washing.
I received the Religious Knowledge Prize at School. Not that I knew anything about Religion. I was just repeating things Parrot fashion.

Our RI teacher looked like Hitler in a dog collar.
Most of the staff were bad teachers and they were all bullies. The pupils at our school weren't bullies.......... just the teachers.
They all loved to use the cane on us and some just belted us across the face with the back of their hand.

Morning All.
I can see we were all; treated the same at school......but do you know what Stephen it really did me no harm even though I was indoctrinated by the nuns.
I was very poor but not as poor as some kids that went to my school with no socks!! My grandmother always knitted me mine ....all different stripes of colour !! had no choice but to wear them.
My upbringing has taught me my values in life, so I have to thank my schooling for that . My parents were not so strict so going home each day to them was a pleasure even though they made me do my homework !! and Sunday mass and benediction. etc,
So you can say I was a good Catholic girl.........BUT IT ALL WENT WRONG WHEN I MARRIED MY PETE ...LOL
He wandered how I got through life being so green about worldly things !! So I have now been taught about worldly things...LOL
I liked being a green simple young lady...........everything now is complicated and hard to see & live. Bring back my schooling days !!
I'm reaping benefits of my life each day, now so I cant really complain but I have worked hard for it and moved away from my family to get it .....oh blimey I'm getting carried away now with my life story as well as Dermot & Stephen
Best go and get a cuppa.....

Stephen I received a prize for Relgious Knowledge when I was 11! I was a good Catholic girl but I think I got a bit short changed when God dished out my family-my Mum died when I was 9 and my Dad died when I was 24 although I did have a Step mum and she died in 2002. I thought I found happiness when I got married but that didn't work out.

I have been doing some work and listening to a radio phone in programme they were speaking about changing religion "Would you change your religion so you could marry ?"
My sister went to the same school as I did. although six years appart.in age, Both brought up church of Egland. she was the first girl to be allowed to sing in the church choir. we were so proud of her.she nvered missed a sunday at church. she then looked after the Vicars two sons when the Vicar and his wife went out. Then she passed the scholarship and went to a Cathloic school... she went on holiday and met an Italian American. he was of course Cathloic. she went into it all about the difference in the religion. she had a word with our Vicar. and told him she was changing her religion He was quiet put out about it and was not kind to her changing her religion.we told her go ahead if that is what you want. your still you. she changed her religion became a Catholic. she is a dovted Cathloic, and a kindly person you would have to go along way to find. she moved back to the States with her husband and had a family, his parents were Italian.born . it was only a few years afterwards she found out her husband ancestor had been a pope and was Clement the tenth she found this out when they went to Rome to visit her sister in laws.and was taken to see the statues of Clement tenth. when we have been abroad and she has written her name or told it. she has been asked if she was related to Clement the tenth. I told her fete played a big part in your life. Cathloic school and changing her relgion. why do people think it changes a person. your still you no matter what. I go to church with her when I stay with her to Mass if at Christmas I go to the Midnight service.most of my close friends are catholic. look at you lot I love you all.

Afternoon everyone
I went to small village school, only 4 classrooms, I always remember 1 teacher Miss McAlister, she had a little bell on her desk and if she wanted silence she would ring it, she had a very squeaky voice. I enjoyed my primary school but secondary wasn't so good.
Rita, My mum's sister changed her religion to get married, from C of E to Catholic.

School Days - as I remember them, warts & all (Part 3).
As well as a new house, Fr Joyce installed a housekeeper, his previous one having retired. There was a possible resemblance to Mrs Doyle, the demon tea & sandwich maker of the Fr Ted comedy TV fame.
Bridget was a kindly woman of middle age when she arrived. She clearly had a weight problem & an impediment in her walk. Her only excursions into the outside world were Sunday services & the odd trip to town for food & household provisions. As well as a small wage from Fr Joyce, she was entitled to some sort of incapacity pension. She looked after all his household needs.
Her predecessor, Mrs Ward, was not of such a kind disposition. She was there while the new house was being built. The story goes that she refused to give the builders a cup of tea one day. The builders had their revenge by making sure that the chimney never functioned properly. She subsequently suffered from sore eyes due to the constant smoke billowing down the chimney as her only means of cooking was the open hearth where peat turf & coal were burned.
A spring water brook flowed through the grounds of the Priest’s house & on into the lake a few miles away. From this brook, we drew water by the bucket for Miss Fox’s tea. Tea made with spring water is always tastier as any mothers’ union would know. The turf fire in the school had to be lit by older children who took it in turn to arrive early so that the fire would be kindled by the time Miss Fox & other pupils made their appearances.
Each family with children at the school would be expected to donate a cartload of turf. On delivery, a few bigger lads would be delegated the task of carrying the turf from the roadside to the small shed at the back of the school. Indeed, we didn’t mind this job because it was a welcome break from the daily school routine.
Sometimes the quality of some of the turf was doubtful or wet perhaps. Oil-soaked firelighters were a regular necessity to get the fire started. But when it was up & running, the bright flames created a warm feeling, even for some of us standing at the back of class after doing some misdemeanour or other.
We were not encouraged by our parents to dilly-dally on our way home from school as there was always plenty of farm work waiting for us. We’d still prolong the journey as much as we’d dare until we’d be overcome by hunger pangs. Everyone in the family had their share of tasks to do. Hard work, fresh air & good food were supposed to be the basis of healthy living.
Well, I’m still around - so I cannot argue with that sentiment. Bed would be welcome most nights - no late night TV because we didn't have one & then all too soon, morning would come & off to school once more.

I am busy still doing my Willesden studies. reading through some of the old papers I came across something about my Grandfather (My Dads Father ) it is anniversry of when he died today 14th Feb 1923. in Isleworth Hospital with TB.when he and my Grandmother split up he left home and went into lodgings.it broke my father heart. although strict Grandfather appears to have been a very good father. worked hard I never met him but Dad spoke often about him . I felt I knew him well.
It took me five years to find out where Grandfather was buried. I loved my Gran, she lived with us. but she never told any of us or her children where their Dad was buried. they saw him often on their way to and from school and he sent money for their keep..
Dad told me he was buried near the back wall of the Willesden Cemetery. one day my sister and I went to take alook but he wasnt there.. we had no one to ask as the family were all dead. so I started writing around just about gave up.. when I had a letter from someone at Isleworth Hospital who gave me the grave number I should say plot number and offered to take me to see where Grandfather Fredrick was buried.. they also told me about his TB . I wonder why ? my father never said anything perhaps he didnt want to upset his mother?, he took care of Gran all his life until she died in 1946 I sent off for his death certificate which I have. but I feel sad when I think of him being a lone when he died. writing about Wilesden today has made me feel a little sad.

Rita sorry you're feeling sad. Research often brings up sad information which makes us reflect doesn't it.
Had a busy day so far, dog was bitten by unidentified "creature" in bush during her early morning walk so is now on antibiotics as leg is swollen around puncture marks and very hot. Pre-school then called as my 3 year old grandaughter had an asthma attack and her inhaler didn't relieve it so I picked her up and got her mum home from work to take her to doctors. I hope she doesn't end up in hospital again. Waiting for news.
OH wants us to go out for a bite to eat, be lucky if we can find somewhere thats not fully booked!! Bless him, lol. At least I got a lovely Orchid.
Hope you are all well, Dermot more great writing, thanks for the read.
