FannyByGaslight Report 7 Jul 2011 21:12

We had the Tivyside in 6inch squares in our "Ty Bach"when I was a small child...No flush either as it was an"Elsan"bucket and chuckit job..
Newspaper was also good to put in yer tooo big wellies to keep yer feet warm and stop them falling off..

Poor hill farmers couldnt afford bathrooms and loo roll...."Recycling" was the byword then without being called that :-D

In days of old
When Knights were bold
And toilet paper had not yet been invented
They wiped their Ass
With some blades of grass
And walked away contented.

and, yes, 6" squares of newsprint were used in outhouses!

My grandparents used to keep the loo at the end of the backyard stocked with newsprint squares.

Even though they had an indoor flush toilet!

actually over here .................... 6" squares of mail order catalogues were used. Last year's catalogue being made available for that purpose when the new one arrived.

Some of these catalogues could be 500 or more pages in size!

In one sense, it is sad to see a 168 year old newspaper stop publishing

.................... but when it's the News of the World, with all its shenanigans, one can only say "about time"

Surely Ginns you are not too young enough not to remember the 6" squares of newspaper which came before the horrible scratchy Izal (or San Izal??) toilet rolls ?? - They were even worse than the newspaper!!!

Hi Sylvs - are your fridge and pantry empty now coz I did my very best but I just couldn't manage it all !!:-D

I am sure I will be very hungry though when you return - Have a lovely trip and we will see you when you get back!!

I seem to remember that the 'school Izal' had writing on which said something like:

Wash your hands NOW (like mummy does). ??????????

I 'may' be confusing a couple of memories together here??

I dont remember newspaper either, infact we had a coloured bathroom suite in 1960 that was unusual I think for the time

It said Gins

The bathroom we had in 1960 was also 'coloured' Ja....x !!

It was our very first bathroom so we were VERY grateful for it but the bath was an old iron one and was very rusty !! - Off white and brown -VERY colourful :-D

My Dad got some special paint and gave it a couple of coats - It stayed the same colour though and big rusty flakes came off every time you had a bath!!

Better than he old tin bath will boiled kettles of hot water though !!!

Thank you for looking for her.

Hi all
xxx

have spent time searching the "permitted / not permitted on planes" listing (Canadian version)

Think I have it straight now

Can take on knitting needles or crochet hooks

Can take on anything in any size if it's "medicinal" ........... except such medicinal aids as brandy, scotch etc not bought at duty-free

Can take on pair of scissors .......... as long as the blades are less than 6 cm long from fulcrum to tip

Can take on gel-filled bras or prostheses

Can take on 2 lithium or lithium ion batteries .......... in carry-on, as long as packed separately. (Why packed separately?? are they an explosive hazard??)

Not that I wanted to know about anything other tthan the knitting needles

I kept getting side-tracked, as one does :-D

I think they should ban walking sticks on planes myself.

Last time I travelled I was hit on the head by one as someone was rumaging in the overhead lockers in his rush to get off the plane first.....It was mine but I did'nt ask for it to be put up there :-)
