Whilst our toilet was down the garden path it was a flush one... but when I went to country cousins or down the line they would have what was known as the outdoor dunny and in some places a night watchman would come and empty them... there are still some of these out in the wop wops and they are called long drops. In fact some of them that are up the mountains have magnificient views. Newspaper squares were what we used when I went to "down on the farm."

We went and stayed at a bach when I was a youngster ... this was on one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf... just a boat ride from the CBD,, we had no toilet we had to go dig a hole in the bushes.... now this area is very much sought after and it is very expensive to buy a house or holiday home there.

One of the things that sold me on buying our cabin in the wilderness back in 1997 was that it had a working flush toilet :-D

The fact that OH had to bring water up from the creek by the bucket load to fill up the water barrel, from which we could take buckets into the bathroom, leaving them standing on the floor until needed to fill up the toilet tank after flushing so that it would be ready for the next use ............... was minor!

We also had a rain barrel that collected water running off the roof ........... but summers could be very dry so that was not a surefire method of getting sufficient water.

We worked on the "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" system!

Then we got a plumber in who installed a pipe down to the creek, a storage tank inside the cabin, and piping to toilet and sinks. Add a pump run by the generator .......... and you get water raised from the creek by magic!

Of course, what happened the first time we had visitors to the cabin, during that first summer?

yep ........ the toilet stopped working.

OH dug a hole up the hill, made a little wooden "stool" to fit over it, and we all had to pad up there :-D

The South African visitors SAID that they enjoyed their time with us :-D

and no-one saw any bears!

Well, I was enjoying breakfast until I started reading back on all your toilet stories!

I like the "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" system!

We had some loo role given as a joke gift, it had George Bushs face printed on it.....enjoyed using that we did although it didnt match the bathroom

We went down the line to a funeral today... I was also doing a bit of family networking while I was there.... they served the usual savouries, buns and cakes but what was welcome on a cold day was that they had done a big stockpot of vege and barley soup... Never had soup at a funeral before.
Was a wet day so the windscreen wipers were swishing away and we had to put them one even during the fine breaks... The big trucks traveling the other way would blast the screen with big wooshes of spray.

Friday evening here 7.30pm

When I went to bed you were all talking about toilets and now, when I've got up, you're still at it!!! Were there toilets which were called 'tipplers'? I assume one had to 'tip' them backwards after use. It's just a vague memory at the back of my mind. A fascinating subject to be sure :-S

Thank you for brekkie Sylvs....I've had the Rice Crispies. Quite often, when I have those, I want to sneeze.......very messy! Was civilized today though :-D

Am hoping to take my 'poorly' friend out this afternoon but the forecast is for rain. Will have to take it as it comes.

Soup sounds good Pers, sorry about the funeral though

Something they have round here occasionally at funerals Perse, is Lancashire hotpot. In fact, they seem to have it for many occasions!

It's really weird to think that you have already had your Friday and we are just beginning ours!

Just got back home.

Took my friend out (in a wheelchair) to a very upmarket garden centre where she bought a skirt, blouse and pair of sandals! We had a wander around and a coffee. If anyone had said to me 6months ago that we would have been doing this, I wouldn't have believed it! Incredible.

Had some torrential rain and now the sun is shining beautifully.....just need to add some snow and we'll have had 4 seasons in one day.

Ginny

To quote a great avian expert

"No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful plumage!" "No, no.....No, 'e's stunned!" "Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords."
