he was starving when he got home!

He had managed to get something to drink ............ juice and coffee

This morning, he went out with 2 bananas in his pocket, and I told him to take a granola bar ............... but I'm not sure whether he did the latter.

and he won't be home until even later tonight

It's one of the (university) President's Receptions for honorary degree recipients this evening.

I decided last night that I wouldn't go, so he was going to stay out on campus rather than rushing home for 10 minutes or so and then going right back out again.

he'll get lovely snacky things there, if he hasn't gone for a pizza!

This was taken on Mum & Dad's wedding day in August 1928. It was a very quiet affair because her brother had died in June, so they were still in mourning.

They are standing in front of her parents front door. The windows that you can just see at the right behind them was the house they had bought, and where I was born.

Grandmother and grandfather's house was "special" .......... they had a very small front garden!

Hi Sylvia.

I sthere anyway on GR you can make the avatar pictures a bit bigger? It looks a lovely picture, I'd like to be able to see more of the details!!

Was your mum's brother killed in the war? Duh ignore that comment I am having a stupid day when I am not thinking clearly at all!

Grace

don't think there is any mean of enlarging them

No, her brother died of leukemia, aged 17.

My brother was born the following year, and was named for him

I didn't follow along until many years after that! Frank was almost ready to leave school and go to work by that time....... so our parents really had two families, each with a single child.

Hi Grace alls well here

Now sylv you know you should'nt write a story about your pics :D

Its a shame we cannot click on them to make them bigger.

I have been doing a bit of research into my ancestors marriages and it seems that if they married christmas or boxing day the bride was not expecting :D any other time of the year it was a rush job

Its sad when there is a family death so close to a family wedding my grandparents died 4 months before one their daughters wedding and 4 days before their youngests 21st birthday.

Your parents must have been rich ...buy a house in 1928?? was it a coronation street type house ?

My grandparents were married boxing day 1926 and did not buy their own house until 1964. They did buy it cash though £1000 but the man they bought from still lived there until he died, which I think was another 6 years.

I dont think they were space wise any better off until he passed away but at least it was theirs.

I found him living in that house in 1901 with his parents, so you can imagine what the decor was like for a single man living there all those years on his own.

It was funny when his long lost neice and nephew turned up at the funeral expecting to inhereit the house....Ooops

Hi all,

The pictures are great anyway. It is really nice being able to see so many different aspects on life.

My mum rembers her 21s t, her cousin died the day before so they never had a celebration for her, and she always remembers that time with sadness.

LOL Jax you can just imagine what the relatives might have been thinking!

I think they were paying it off for the next 25+ years!

It was a typical Victorian terraced house ............... Coronation Street if you like.

Front door opened onto the street, though there was a little vestibule, as we called it, with an inside door.

Living room, kitchen cum eating, 2 bedrooms upstairs, no indoor bathroom, outside toilet at the end of the backyard.

We lived there until 1951 when we moved to the other side of town to a larger house which would let me have my own room.

My brother immediately got married, and they came to live with us!

Just been checking the bmd's for the family that my grandparents bought the house from.

In 1911 mum, dad born c.1865 and two sons aged 19 and 16... dad died 1923 mum 1943 younger son married 1937 and had a child in 1939

So was son (Frank) who was still at home at 52 given the family home when his mother died or perhaps he bought it at a later date?or maybe he bought it while his parents lived there?

Whatever...This nephew as it turns out and his wife could only have what he had in his bank if anything and no family house :D

I remember my 21st too Grace my dads only sister died that day. I was just about to go off to work and the phone rang and it was my cousin in Oz thought he had rang to say happy birthday but wanted to speak to my dad...how my dad kept it from me I dont know...but he did'nt want to spoil my day :-(

Anyway off to bed been up 22 hrs now aghhh

have a good night Jax, how sad for you...life is funny isn't it.

In doing my tree I am a bit shocked how many birth dates my family shares with exact death dates of previous generations. rarely does anyone have the same birth day bit often the saem death & birth date.

jax Report 27 May 2011 05:44

Even so sylv to have a mortgage was a big thing then.

My parents were the first in their family to buy a house and that was 1960

So if you lived in a "coronation street" house it must have been a Tardis...I have seen how many people that can live in those little houses :D

hope you are now sleeping soundly!

There were 4 in our house ............ brother got the back bedroom all to himself, and I shared a bedroom with my parents until we moved. I think it was becoming a bit embarassing for them as I got older.

Gosh you had a good chat last night folks!

My grandparents were married on Boxing Day in 1904. They moved around a bit because he was in the Royal Marines and then went to Canada for a few years. They eventually settled back here in Rochester an bought a house in the 1940's for about £300 I think.

My, how times have changed..... :S
