Jonesey

I have no idea how many languages the Candian 2011 census was in :-D

I think I was just surprised at his lack of facility in French.

Sylvia,

Would it have done him much good to have been taught French in England?

The person who tried and I emphasise tried, to teach me French was a Welshman. He told me that for the first 5 years of his life he spoke only Welsh (Which does have some words in common with French) and he eventually went to University in Aberystwyth to continue his French studies but then decided that the only way to learn French properly was to go and live in France for a while. He worked in a bar in Lyon and the locals there referred to him as l'homme Parisienne because the French taught in the UK is French as spoken in Paris, not all parts of France. A bit like Oxford English which these days isn't even spoken on the BBC.

From what I understand the French spoken in Canada (both Québécois and Acadian) is substantially different from international French in any case.

His father and Grandma may be able to speak French alright but they cant speak Welsh alright..
I could not learn French even though told it was very similar to Welsh but I dont think it is.
Welsh is phonetical and French is not,Spanish is more like Welsh I think personally.
My French teacher (A Welshman like Joneseys)gave up on me after the first term and I read anything and everything in class as long as it did not include French...Although he did tell me that for the odd words I did learn I had the best accent of the class.

Dont blame him leaving Aberystwyth Jonesey...Cold,always cold there with the nasty wind coming off the sea...

I am now orf to bed..~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Jonesey

sleep tight!

Quebecois French is indeed very different from French French

It is based on the French spoken in the 16th Century, when the French first settled here. It developed in isolation from France, and has incorporated many English words.

The first sentence I heard spoken by an ordinary Quebecois back in 1967 was "Donnez moi le monkey wrench"!

This came after a flight from Manchester to New York, and then north to Montreal, and was well after midnight. To say I was confused is ............... well, it's my usual state ;-)

Acadien French is different again ............... they were thrown out of Canada in the 18th century, and sent down to Louisiana, where their French was influenced by Spanish, Mexican, and American

Also most of the original settlers were countrymen, farmers, etc. The "nobs" tended to stay only relatively short periods. So the language that was used was mainly "peasant" French.

It is exactly the same way in which the American language has developed ................. their "English" is based on 17th and 18th century English, with a lot of its simplistic spelling.

I was taught French for the first 3 years by a Frenchman who had stayed in Lanashire after WW2. Then we had a more academic teacher for 1 year ........ Monsieur was not actually a trained teacher so couldn't take us to O levels. Then I got the "dragon from hell" for the 5th year (O level year) ........................ she carried all before her and still had plenty to fall back on ( :-D ) .... and she really was a dragon. BUT you got the mark in the O levels that she predicted you would get.

I looked at it earlier could'nt really understand who they were looking for or where, but there were no dates just names and the only reason I can see why was because they gave an email address.

Does seem rather petty for someones first post on the boards, hope the reporter pm'd the reason to the poster.

Does'nt seem like 20 years since I was on my way to the hospital to have my first child, I think they speeded it up so she was born on the 4th July. I did'nt have the same with my second just got to the hospital in time.
