Can someone tell me why William was not taught good French?

He's struggling over here ...... trying but not doing too well ..... it is being taken in good form though. I haven't seen anybody complaining

He gave a speech today entirely in French ...... well, they were in Quebec ;-) ................. they took it in good part.

But wouldn't you have thought that French would have been a priority for him to learn?

Grandma speaks good French, or so I understand.

Bags Jax??
We didnt get bags given to us just the little brown bin for indoors and the bigger green bin to chuck it all into outside to put out for the bin men...

Told to put cardboard (degradable only)in the bottom of big bin or nothing. We just rinse it out every week. The brown one indoors is washed out every time it is emptied into the green one.

One of our green bins went walkabout one time so I just phoned the council and they delivered another one....Said it happened a lot.Wind, run over,nicked...Must cost em a fortune to replace them all the time..

Dont be silly Sylvs..French/English and Welsh to learn all at once??Lucky he can speak decent English and you cant really say that lot are the Brains of Britain now can you?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jul 2011 21:45

well, he did get a degree, so there must be a few brains in there :-)

AND he would have required 1 foreign language to be accepted at uni ..... unless things are very different at Scottish unis

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Jul 2011 21:45

Je n'ai aucune idée pourquoi William n'était pas enseigné le français. Peut-être qu'il n'a pas été jugée nécessaire parce qu'il est d'être un futur roi d'Angleterre, non pas la France.

Who needs to speak French when you have Google translate available ;-)

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Jul 2011 21:51

And you REALLY think that ANY Uni was going to turn him down because of the lack of a foreign language???

Dear oh me Sylvs....
And there was a lot of Hooha about exactly HOW he got his degree at the time I believe. :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jul 2011 21:54

but ................... as things stand, he will be the King of Canada at some time in the future

and Canada is officially a bilingual country

those 2 languages are French and English ....... could also well be an Asian language added in the future.

so he is speaking to his future "subjects"

I think there is a great deal of good will toward him and Kate at the moment ............. but there is a large anti-monarchy group over here.

disclosure ............ I cannot speak French, although I did get my O level exam in it.

Anyone wishing to work as a Civil Servant for the Government of Canada has to have at least a working knowledge of French

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jul 2011 21:55

does his grandmother have any more brains than he does?

yet she speaks very passable French.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Jul 2011 21:59

He will also be the King of Wales at some point I would think Sylvs and he also lives and works in Wales, dont mean he can talk the talk though...I have heard him and he is total rubbish...Worse than me and I rarely speak it now.

But I did have a conversation in Welsh with a 4 yr old the other day on the merits of RED tractors over BLUE tractors from the toy box I keep here...
He said the RED tractor made a better noise and his grandad told him to stop revving it up..you know, one of those toys you clockwork the wheels on.
:-D

Think his grandma does have a few more brains really and prob tried harder to do her duty thoroughly being from "a different generation"...

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Jul 2011 22:00

Sylvia,

If it is of any consolation the 2011 UK census form was available in 67 different languages.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Jul 2011 22:03

Here you need to speak Welsh and English for many jobs, specially public sector ones .
