The Bereavement allowance is given to every person that dies ---so I was told ---- it has to do with NI contributions made by the deceased


Surely all the records were at his house -- have you not been in his home

Dea - just spotted your remark about Pensions. If you think he had a State Pension i.e. OAP, you ought to contact the Department of Works and Penions.

DWP Bereavement Service

In England and Wales, the DWP Bereavement Service allows you to report a death to the DWP in a single phone call, which will cover all the DWP benefits the person who died was getting. At the same time, the Bereavement Service can do a benefit check to find out if the next of kin can claim any benefits and take a claim for bereavement benefits or a funeral payment over the phone.

If you have already reported the death to the Tell Us Once service, you don't need to tell the DWP Bereavement Service. But you can contact the DWP as well if you would like them to do a benefit check or help you to claim bereavement benefits.

Our pensions are paid straight into our bank account too.


Dea, you really need to go through his paperwork yourself. There could be things which are essential and also personal.

I have a friend whose brother died in similar circumstances last year. She and her husband had quite a time sorting his paperwork out and found bank accounts and stocks and shares all over the place.

What about his bills etc...........

I really am not well enough to do it myself !! and I live SO far away!!

The neighbours are sorting it, and the council !!

I really do not want anything from him but just want to tie up all the 'loose ends'

Just want to do things right !!

P.S. - Thanks DetEcTive - I contacted them but they say that they only cover certain areas and NOT the Central Manchester area which is involved here.

I will send off the form and wait to see what happens.

The council normally skip EVERYTHING when they clear a house/flat...They wont leave you his personal stuff...The lot goes I believe,so really you need to clear his personal papers and such before they go in there.

Please do not get spooked but your request for pension information triggered a memory.

Many years ago I helped my mother in law sort out the affairs of her cousin who had died intestate. The deceased was a spinster with no living relatives other than my M-I-L.

There were a couple of building society accounts with moderate balances plus a small amount of cash, her personal possessions and her benefit/pension book which revealed that she had not collected her pension for a couple of months prior to her death. Letters of administration were obtained and I suggested that the first thing to do would be to obtain the monies from the building society accounts. That done it only remained to contact the benefits office to arrange for payment of the outstanding pension due.

A letter, the pension book and a copy of the letters of administration was sent off and a reply received asking for sight of the building society books which were duly sent. Eventually a letter was received from the pensions department stating that based upon the balances in the BS books it was noted that the deceased had for a considerable period of time, been in receipt of benefits to which she was not entitled. Rather than sending a couple of months payments, they claimed repayment of the overpayment which all but consumed the amount that had been in the building society accounts.

In the years that followed we often laughed about the legacy that almost was.
