Sorry about the page stretching - when you post a long link yourself, it isn't obvious what has happened.

Somewhere there is a number for the DWP -they are the ones who pay out the Old Age Pension if Dea's brother was entitled to it. The web address was the only one I could find on their site, so if they don't deal with it, they must be able to give you the number.

Thanks all for your advice - I know exactly what you mean Jonesey - that happened to me several years ago when I was sorting out my mum's bits and pieces.

They calculated her pensions and allowances paid, to the very day she died and then sent me a bill for what they then said had been 'overpaid', down to the past penny.

I thought at the time that this was rather petty but sent them a cheque anyway.

Perhaps they should send out instructions to people to make sure that they 'popp off' on the last day of the payments they have received so that they make sure they haven't had anything they are not entitled to ;-)

Such is life, I suppose!

Thank you Persie......I like liver and bacon too but will stick with just bacon this morning I think. I'll definitely have some of that gingerbread for later - one of my favourite cakes...........mmmm. Thanks again.

'Tis beginning to rain :-(

Cyn,

Unfortunately that is an area where I have no knowledge. I have done a bit of Googling and this appears to be the best way forward but unfortunately it doesn't look as though it can be done online:

The National Archives of Scotland, H.M. General Register House, 2 Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3YY; tel +44 (0) 131 535 1314; email: [email protected]

How to find testaments from 1902
From 1902, to search for the will and/or inventory of someone who died in Scotland or someone with Scottish connections who died outwith Scotland, you need to know:
the person's name,
where they lived, and
when they died.
There is an annual index of testaments, the Calendar of Confirmations. From 1901 to 1959 it takes the form of printed or typed volumes and from 1960 it is in the form of microfiche cards. The Calendar covers all of Scotland and gives details of the deceased, their place and date of death, and details of when and where their testament is recorded. The index is available in the Historical Search Room and the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, holds copies up to 1936. From 1985-1996 there is a computer index available in the NAS search rooms.

I am guessing that the "Vitalcertificates" people mentioned by Gin do the legwork needed for their fee.

Good luck.

Thank you kindly both. I have all the details of the deceased so will try the links mentioned. Much obliged. :-D

Cyn,

Just had a thought.

You could try a post at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,84.0.html

You might be lucky enough to find someone willing to visit either the NAS or the Mitchell library on your behalf.

Anyone know what to do when a laptop will not keep it's wifi connection...apart from plugging it into the box thing or getting a new one

Jonesey Report 3 Sep 2011 15:00

Jax,

I presume that you mean that your laptop's internal wireless modem loses its connection with your router (The box thing).

Has wireless connection been lost completely or is it just that connection is intermittent? If intermittent there could be several reasons, not necessarily attributed to either the modem or your router. Things such as other radio signals, physical obstructions or even atmospheric conditions can all have an effect on the wireless signal transmitted by your router and picked up by your modem. Has anything altered in the area in your home where you have your router and where you normally use your laptop? Something as silly as a new portable telephone can have an effect.

If in the worst scenario your laptop's wireless modem has packed up that would not mean buying a new laptop. There are plug in wireless adaptors available at a cost of approximately £15~20 that you can use as an alternative.

Wo have twp PC's (one laptop the other is desk top) in the same room using the same wireless network.

The desktop is ok and mine has been ok since its been plugged into the box but it is a bit dangerous with wires all over the room.

Yesterday it lasted 5 mins or sometimes an hour before it lost connection

Jax when your wifi drops out have a look at the network connections on the laptop. This is the two computer icons on your task bar at the bottom of the screen. Click on this and open networks. This will show all wireless networks in your area, secured and unsecured and hopefully yours will be listed. Click on this and it should reconnect.

My broadband has been solved, kinda. Switched phone lines but the help desk couldn't connect using my new router so got another one from the shop which also failed on both of my lines. So I have a loan router which I have just set up and seems to be working fine.
