Syl was the plane crash anywhere close to you apparentaly just outside YVR

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Oct 2011 06:44

Hi all
xxx

R .................. the crash was about 2 miles away from where we live ........ but across the Fraser River, in the city of Richmond.

In fact, we couldn't even see the smoke. However, we did see the traffic jams .............. 3 bridges across the river from Vancouver to Richmond were closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles.

We had to drive down one of the roads that leads south to one of those bridges to get home, just about the time that every emergency vehicle you could think of was racing south .................... luckily we know all the back ways to get to our house without going via main roads.

The most impressive ones that passed us were 2 police motorcyclists, zigzagging between traffic, from one side of the road ot the other, as they tried to get through the jammed traffic on our side. Boy, those motorcyclists are good!

The pilot has died, but there were some heroes who pulled the passengers out of the plane.

For the rest of you ...... a small 9 passenger plane had to turn back to Vancouver Airport about 15 minutes after take-off ....... there was some sort of malfunction, but the pilot did not declare an emergency, just that he had to return.

As he was approaching the airport, 90 seconds from landing, it appears that a wing tip touched at least one of the lamp standards along the major road he was crossing.

The plane hit the ground, burst into flames and skidded some distance.

The road is usually full of traffic ......... but he managed to find a fairly clear spot. One car was hit by debris and one person walking by was also hit by debris.

People jumped of cars, ran out of offices, etc, and all 7 passnegers were pulled out within minutes ...... bfore the emergency vehicles arrived in fact. And the first of those arrived within 2 minutes!

The pilot and co-pilot were trapped in the cockpit, and everyone was apparently surpirsed to see them come out alive.

The co-pilot is in critical condition.

Two major roads in Richmond were blocked either by the palne or by emergency vehicles. It was almost impossible to get to the airport if that was your destination, because traffic from Vancouver that would normally have gone along the plane-blocked road was diverted in the direction of the airport so that it could be turned around, sent back north over the bridge to Vancouver and then diverted east to one of the bridges further away.

Oh yes

there was another blockage on that same road south, Oak Street, this morning

I can see Oak Street from my kitchen window, and noticed that there was a blockage, then I heard emergency vehicles ....... so I turned on the traffic radio station.

A pedestrian had been hit on the south side of the intersection that I can see........ but fortunately I cannot see where it had happened.

But the accident and the emergency vehicles stopped all trafic on Oak Street from some time!

I haven't heard anything since .... but presume that the person has survived, otherwise the intersection would have been cblocked for much longer as the police measured distances, etc etc.

Reminder to oneself ... do not take a small plane ride from Vancouver....

Hospital officials have confirmed that the pilot of a plane that crashed onto a busy street near the Vancouver International Airport has died. The other eight people on board are injured. It could have been a lot worse if not for the quick-thinking of people on the street, who witnessed the crash first-hand - and rushed to help.

Then I went on to read
Plus, this Remembrance Day the wife of a vet wants to wear his medals. Thing is, she's not legally allowed to. It's legal in countries such as Australia and Britain, but not Canada. So, what's wrong with a widow choosing this way, to keep her husband's memory alive?

This is more of a comment blog than newspaper material.

Morning Persie!

I was looking at Sylvia's brunch menu and quite fance (amongst other things for my plate :-)), the Holywood Lamb Chops!

When I see 'unknown' items on your menu's or on Sylvia's, I can usually find them on google but I can't find out anything about this recipe - Are you familiar with it where you are?
