St. George is the patron saint of England.

His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag.

St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century.

The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

I suppose you could say he is our Patron Saint by inspiration rather than by birth.

Now I will go and bang my head on that wall!

Just been watching the Louis Theroux programme on Autism from last week on the BBCiPlayer. It was very good and very moving.

I will........I will......... Thank you Sylvia <3 <3

Off to get my breakfast now that I still have my 'special' plate to pile it onto!

Wouldn't want to go dropping any of it on the floor ;-) :-D

Right then - bacon & cheese quiche, some chicken stir-fry, Chicken breast, bacon, tomato and lettuce on focaccia roll, a couple of pieces of Chicken Karage and a Country Wrap.

There, it all fits and just enough room on the side for a slice of tomato toast. :-D :-D

Gin,

St George, patron saint of England was born in Turkey.

St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland believed to have been born in Wales.

St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland was born in Palestine.

International transfers were happening long before football was invented. ;-)

Only the Welsh stuck with home grown talent. :-D

Gee

Gee Report 24 Apr 2012 08:31

One more thing............

How do you get to be a patron saint??????

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 24 Apr 2012 08:51

The Pope is usually the one to decide who will be a saint and who will not, but after a huge investigation and approval of other priests and Catholics. He makes the final decision. He may assign a certain Saint as the patron saint of a profession, way of life or illness.
Centuries can pass after someone receives sainthood before he or she becomes the patron saint of anything. For example with St. Clare, who founded the Poor sisters in the 12th century is now the patron saint of television because it was said she lay ill in her bed and would watch "mass" through the walls of her room.

The choice of saint to represent a country is made by a reigning Monarch, government or church leaders. A petition for approval is sent to the Congregation for Causes of Saints in the Vatican. If devotion, in that country, to the saint in question can be proved to the Congregations satisfaction, approval is given via an Apostolic Letter from the reigning Pope.

Gee

Gee Report 24 Apr 2012 08:58

I'll not bother then, takes too long ;-)

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 24 Apr 2012 09:03

Gins,

Probably a wise decision besides which if the stories that I have heard about you are even half true then your chances of it ever happening are pretty slim. ;-)

Gee

Gee Report 24 Apr 2012 09:05

Charming!
