Im sorry to hear about your brother but I am glad that he is OK

You must have been going out of your mind with worry

Oh no, I've missed the latest natural disaster, no time to look at news this morning -- now Japan. Is the eastern Pacific rim about to fall off or something?

I have a good friend in Japan, although I haven't been in touch for a couple of years ... not good at keeping in touch. Not even sure where she is; she's a professor, her Japanese husband lives in another city nearby, and his parents are farmers. I'll have to investigate.

Glad to hear your brother is intact MC. Even if none of his stuff is -- homeless, pretty awful. Hope you track down your other friends.

Irene, I've missed something along the way -- you're sellig up in Spain and relocating back home? Lucky FBG visited when she did!

I've probably missed lots of other stuff too ... thanks to all for the well wishes for my mum which I'll pass on, and you can take hers back at ya as read.

Have had good news about 3 friends -safe and sound. Although H who works in Tokyo can't contact his wife and kids in Hokkaido. Just got to find J in Chiba now .....

Brother will be fine, apartment was rented so they'll just move into another - it's the way there. He'll be happier once he can give wifie a hug! She's a fantastic lass.

Thanks all!

Hi all
xxx

so glad your brother, his wife and friends are all safe.

Just heard on my radio that a second, separate earthquake has struck near Nagano, Japan.

Thanks R for your thoughts for us

The outer coast of BC is still under a Tsunami advisory.

Victoria and Vancouver are safe, because we are protected by Vancouver Island, but from Alaska to the northern tip of Haida Gwaii (aka Queen Charlotte Islands) south along the outer coast of Vancouver and then down to California is still at risk

Granted, the waves seen so far have been negligible, but later waves can be larger than the first ones to arrive. This is why the original Tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory, which will remain in effect for several more hours

The first waves to hit Hawaii were:- 3 metre waves hit Kauai, 1 m waves hit Honolulu washing up onto roadways but not reaching hotels, and 2 m waves in Maui. Larger waves could still arrive.

The first waves hit on the Orgeon coast about 60 minutes ago.

One danger not often noted is that the underwater currents become stronger, and more erratic ............... so there is a ban (as much as can be enforced!) on small boats going out to sea.

OH once had a post-doc who came from Sendai in Japan, the city closest to the epicentre, and a guy with the same name was interviewed this morning on our national radio ...... from Toronto which is where K now lives.

We're pretty certain it was the same guy .......... he said he had a brother living in a coastal city about 60 km from Sendai which has been basically washed away, and another one who lives in Sendai. He cannot get in touch with either one because pones etc are either out or busy. OH is trying to get hold of K to give him our best wishes.

JC - what a wonderful mum you have! Certainly seems to have an indomitable spirit, wish her well from me. I'd like to be like that when I grow up!

MC I am glad to hear that your brother and his family are safe. It must be a very worrying time for you all the same, especially with still no word of your friends. My best wishes are with you.
