Canada has its census on May 10

We're going to have a compulsory short form, and a voluntary long form, called the National Household Survey

The head of the federal government's Statistics Canada quit his job because of what is NOT going to be asked

................ and because several government ministers said that he had been a party to the discussions regarding the change, and had agreed with them.

It seems they lied :)))

As with other decennial censuses, the data will be used to adjust federal electoral district boundaries

The 2011 Census will actually consist of the same eight questions that appeared on the 2006 Census short-form questionnaire, with the addition of two questions on language ............ which are in response to a lawsuit brought by the Federation of Francophone and Acadian Communities, which claimed that the voluntary status of the long-form census would impact language-related government services. Canada does have 2 official languages, French and English.

Various other organizations have already called for changes for the upcoming census, but it doesn't seem that they are likely to happen:

- Adding "Aboriginal identifier" to the short form (already found on the long form).
- Relationship of same-sex married couples.
- Place of work and transportation-related questions.
- Food security questions.

Meanwhile, the National Household Survey (NHS) is mired in controversy. The NHS will be conducted within four weeks of the May 2011 Census and will include approximately 4.5 million households. The information collected by the NHS is intended to replace the data from the previous long-form census questionnaire. This questionnaire will cover most of the same topics as the 2006 Census.

Various industry professionals have indicated that the data collected by the NHS will not be compatible with the data previously collected by the long form questionnaire. Many of the same professionals also say that the data gathered by a voluntary survey will not be of the same quality as the previous mandatory long form

Munir Sheikh, Chief Statistician of Canada, and appointed by Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper on February 15th 2008, resigned on July 21, 2010 in protest of the Conservative government's change in policy. In a public letter, Sheikh wrote that he could not legally comment on what advice he had given the government regarding the census, but he did comment against the government's decision, writing:

I want to take this opportunity to comment on a technical statistical issue which has become the subject of media discussion. This relates to the question of whether a voluntary survey can become a substitute for a mandatory census.
It can not. —Munir Sheikh

It doesn't look as though our census will be any more use than yours!

I posted something on the topic Census night tomorrow ..... on the GR wall ...................wonder if she will have any comment?

also ................. don't fall off your chair ............ but I've posted that I admire dilly dally

she's got the courage of her convictions re the UK census not to send it in, and tell the government she's not doing it ..................... which does leave her open to prosecution and jail time!

I have just had a look at that 1911 web page and to be perfectly honest it is a little insipid for me.

Gins

there was a 1911 Census group started by a Sharon H. I ticked it as being interested last week, for some reason.

There is a topic on the GR Wall "Census night tomorrow in the UK, Has anyone invented a new religion on theirs or race?"??

JC and I, along with a couple of others, said that we would be putting no religion (if we were doing your cnesus that is!). Said Sharon got on her high horse about being Christian, and accused JC and I of Christian bashing ..... which we had NOT done. At least, I don't think we had.

anyway, today, I am banned from that 1911 Census Group page ............ and there is a not very pleasant posting by her on that "wall"

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Mar 2011 22:41

lol!

C ......... just don't coming knocking on my freont door to proseltyze me!

Mind you, I am very polite to them:- "I don't talk religion on the doorstep. Good Bye". Close door!

The funniest one of those was a couple of years ago. I opened the front door to see 2 Chinese ladies standing there, possibly from the Baptist Church which is just across the street from us. They looked at me wide eyed. Then said

"You're not chinese?"

"No, I'm not"

"Is there any Chinese living here"

........ one of them peering round me to see inside the house. I'm sure she thought I was hiding a Chinese person somewhere

"No. We've lived here over 40 years, and there's never been a Chinese person here"

"Oh. We wanted to talk to you about God"

Silly -- our Chinese Christians just drop leaflets in the mailbox constantly (and constantly want to expand their church use down the street contrary to the zoning bylaws ...). Before that, from an earlier immigration era, it was the JoHos trying to hit on the Portuguese residents here.

After enough Saturday mornings being dragged out of the bathtub, I posted my front porch a religious proselytizing free zone, and obtained written confirmation from the local Kingdom Hall that I had given notice that anyone caught on my property was trespassing. It worked!

Back to the hot topic -- does no one in the UK do anything but whine about "bullying"?? What a bunch of milksop idiots. Disagree with someone, question someone, and you're a bully.

Not.

I had posted something quite useful on the stupid woman's fb page, about the disabiltiy column in the 1911 and the 100 year rule. Now all that's left is her thanking me for the info. ;)

Silly, silly people.

If you still want to see it, S, it's

/group.php?gid=150668788279252&v=wall

"I banned a couple of bully boys from this group on a pre-emptive basis, although we all know I'm talking about girls .... for goodness' sake, grownups bullying other grownups ?????? Sadly, th'internet gives the ignorant, the arrogant, the rude and generally vile people a voice and there's not much we can do about that.... Tim Berners-Lee should have seen that one coming."

Thee 'n me, in lights. ;)

Isn't that just sweet?

Not "bullying" at all, to post that kind of garbage on facebook. Noooo.
