Not sure I could get excited about a new cooker to be honest......dishwasher yes.....cooker ...no. Anyway, enjoy it Dea. :D

I've gotta prob with the birds as well Sylvs. The corner of our roof/gutter thing is home to a family of Starlings. They aren't half noisy and obviously don't like making a mess of their little house but the paving underneath needs a scrub down! I'll wait till they've flown the nest.

I see trouble popped in before! Wonder what she's up too - it's worrying when she goes quiet :-(

Glad you are feeling a bit better today Fans!

Sylvia - what on earth is a 'sabbath setting' ???

SylviaInCanada Report 11 May 2011 20:11

it's a setting on the stove I bought a couple of years ago!

I had to google it to find out what it was for, 'cos the instruction booklet didn't tell me "why", just how to operate it!

members of strict Jewish sects cannot do any work on the Sabbath. Observant Jews interpret this to include doing things such as making a fire, preparing food or even closing a switch or pressing an electronic button.

or opening a refrigerator door if that works a light switch

Modern appliances now have a safety feature that turns off the heating elements after a certain number of hours .... so the "old" method of cooking the food the evening before and just leaving the oven turned on on "Keep Warm" or low setting, won't work.

so my cooker has a setting which allegedly allows you to start cooking the evening before the Sabbath starts, then it keeps the food warm all through the Sabbath day.

I've never tried it

Opening the door to get the food out is seemingly allowed

Similarly, some refrigerators have a Shabbat setting that allows one to open the door BUT the lights and all other electrical activity, including compressor, does not begin as a result.

I understand how you can get excited over a new oven......but as you cant cook Cyns

.....I see your dilemma!

Dea

Dea Report 11 May 2011 20:18

Well Sylvia ............

I have to say, I have nothing against Jewish people, or indeed anyone with absolutely any other religious beliefs, however, I draw the line at a 'sabbath setting' on 'my' new cooker !!!

If it does have one, will send it back immediately - I have had enough problems with my cookers in the recent past - I can take NO MORE !!!!!

To be fair Ginns - I don't think that Cynthia is a 'can't cook' - I think she is more of a 'won't cook' !!

I am a 'can't dust - won't dust' and a can't iron, won't iron (unless it is REALLY necessary).!

Cynthia is brilliant at both of those things but she really doesn't like cooking !

Cooking is something I really enjoy and, on good days, I am still able to do it !!!

OOOhhh the joys of life !!

Bring on the new cooker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dea

It is so inconspicuous that I can't even tell you which buttons you have to press to set it up.

I only know about it because I saw the heading in the Operating Instructions.

it does seem that it might be difficult to turn it off once set until the time is up .......... so it could be a good excuse for getting take-out in!

Sorry Sylvs.....missed your posting. Yes, I had the grandchildren today, so a good time was had by all!

Never heard of the Sabbath setting before....very interesting. It brought back some memories as we had quite a large community of orthodox Jews in Liverpool and I remember that they would walk to the synagogue on Saturdays - not use their cars or buses etc.

I could do with a cooker which says........leave it to me and I'll make the meals :D

Dea

Dea Report 11 May 2011 20:42

OOOhh - How I wish we lived closer Cynths.

You could do my cleaning and ironing and I could do all your cooking !!

What a wonderful mix that would be !!!

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 11 May 2011 21:14

That would be ideal Dea!

I could pop round to yours in the morning with my duster and hoover and you could come round to mine in the afternoon to do the evening meal. My OH peels the veg so you wouldn't have to do that! I can do your ironing on Mondays........lol

Dea

Dea Report 11 May 2011 21:15

I was going to say that that' naughty Ginns - they shouldn't be drinking that - It is cheating !!

Then I saw your 'Yikes!' but didn't know where that came from ???

Do you have an 'intruder' in your house or is it just JB feeling 'frisky' ???

Dea Report 11 May 2011 21:20

Ohhh Cynthia !!!!!

I can only think of one expression that would describe my joy at that but it is in Spanish - Renes would understand!

The word is' Ojala ' - loosely translated as 'If only that were true'!!

It doesn''t 'quite' fit in English bu it does in Spanish !!

How I wish I lived next door to you !
