we had a programme on the radio thise morning, a whole 30 minutes ................. on whether there should be 1 space or 2 spaces between th end of one sentence and the start of the next.

At least 2 articles have been written about this very recentl ........ I think both are on the internet ................. the one sayng only one space has had over 2000 comments

Apparently, 2 spaces comes from typewriting days, when all letters and spaces took up exactly the same amount of "space"

Now that computers have "adjustable" letters, the belief is only 1 space is needed.

Gins....just be told will yer? goes off muttering about someone being hardwork..........>>>>>>>>>

<<<<<<<back again...

Poor Dea........hope it all sorts itself out for tomorrow and you are back on form.

Hey Sylvs, that was interesting because I trained as a shorthand typist and we were taught to put two spaces after a full stop!

Cor....those were the days............typewriter ribbons.....mucky fingers......tippex papers......tippex ink.......carbon paper.......winding the old duplicator........having to use maths to 'centre' something in the middle of the page. I hated that because I am not particularly good with figures.

Fingers of left hand poised over ASDF...... fingers of right hand poised over JKL; Palms staying in the same place and fingers flying around....yep I can still speed type folks ;-)

Goes off into dream world................

I am led to believe that there was a big game hunt over there for a white tiger

Do you remember the shorthand 'thingies' Cynthia to learn the vowel placings ??

'That pen is not much good.

'Pa may we all go too'

How 'sad' is that ???

It's a bit like the first Spanish phrase book I bought many years ago which had 'really' useful phrases in there like 'Can you pleaxse tell me where I can stable my horse' ??

Gosh, I AM feeling old !

I thought it might bring some memories back, C!

I wasn't trained to be a typist .... wasn't allowed to do that course because I was in the "academic" stream, and we "would never need to know how to type"

Balls!

I taught myself to type on an electric typewriter when I was working in Texas

......... boss went off on a field trip, idea was that after 1 week he would begin sending back "specimens" and I would process them.

I spent the first week catching up on stuff, etc.

AND the first half of the second week

Then I'd done everything I could do, but no "specimens" arrived.

In fact nothing came in until he returned .................... he had found only ONE thingy in the whole 6 weeks

I spent 4½ weeks with nothing to do, but did have the electric typewriter ......... and some vague memories of what my sister-in-law had tried to teach me back when I was 12.

As for "not needing to type" ............................ that 4½ weeks turned out to be the best thing I could have done

Even thought I only use one or two finger per hand!

I do have pretty good speed.

One thing I was taught when it came to writing papers for publication was

TWO spaces between paragraphs!

I can remember PB TD CHAY JAY Dea but not much else! I could probably still do some shorthand if pushed. Just don't wanna be pushed!

Yes R. It was on the news tonight. I do wonder how much that police operation cost. Hope it wasn't somebody being silly :-(

Dea

Dea Report 23 May 2011 21:18

I remember that too Cynths :D

It equates to:

\\ II //, I believe - the second strokes being thicker than the first ones!!

I did a commercial course at school and decided after the 1st week I did not want to be a shorthand typist but had to do it all the same for two years.

I passed the typing c.s.e and the pitmans, but shorthand I got a "U"...Oh well never mind :D

I remember an "x" was a full stop thats about it now

When we married, OH had a smallish portable manual typewriter

He had typed the whole of his PhD thesis on that, with carbon copy.

Then he paid someone to do a fair copy with carbon

Then he had to xerox the master to get enough copies for his committee, and eventually to put into the library at Liverpool.

Some of the students paid the departmental secretaries to copy from their hand written work.

We had that typewriter until 3 or 4 years ago ....... then he took it down to the Sally Ann with 2 others, told the daughter that weekend what he had done ........ and she was sooooooooooooooo upset.

She had wanted to keep it, and the other 2!
