Ooooerr ! Sylvia,

That 'university's graduation ceremony' sounds a bit like our 'royal wedding !!

Hope you have bought yourself a 'nice frock and a big hat' !!!

Hey Syl

Your OH wouldnt be doing that outside here!

Dea.....I is merely stating a fact my dear :0

Gins

they' always had a procession into the place where the ceremony takes place.

It's part of the ceremonial aspect.

Even the Official Stage Party (university President, Chancellor, and the big wigs) have to make the same walk.

They then process into the theatre and into their designated seats, in a certain order.

BUT, there is no requirement for the students to HAVE to attend the degree ceremony, as there was when I graduated from Liverpool

Then, if you did not attend to receive your "piece of paper" and be "bonked on the head", then you were not entitled to say that you had xxx degree.

Don't know whether that still applies?

Gee Report 25 May 2011 18:25

Still applies that graduates dont have to attend....I didnt, I was busy with other stuff!

Dea

Dea Report 25 May 2011 19:31

I didn't 'graduate' but I achievd many more qualifications later !

I don't think I would have been there to recieve them in earlier years either !!

Gins

I meant I didn't know if it still applied that students HAD to attend the ceremony

Death (of student or very close family member) was the only acceptable reason for not attending.

one of OH's classmates didn't get his Bachelor degree, and could not state that he had gained it, until he could finally attend a ceremony 2 years later

The reason? He started his PhD immediately he'd finished his Bachelor's, and his supervisor immediately sent him to Iceland on field work for the summer

and you are probably much better qualified than any of us!!

My Dad was Foreman in the machine shop of an engineering company.

He absolutely hated getting a unviersity-educated engineering grad on assignment to "his" shop

he used to say, in his broad Lancashire accent, "they kna nowt, and they canna learn"

he found that, for most of them, book learning was useless when it came to actually doing the job.

Thank you Dea for those few kind words. Don't know what our Sylvs is laughing about though.....tuts.

Gins? There's facts and there's facts!! What I am in my age does not tally with what I am in my head!

Hi Silvia,

I dread to think that I would be 'more qualified than any of you !!"

I DO know though that my dad used to use the 'thee and thou" words - AND my grandad who when he saw what I was wearing in the 60's - he used to say to me 'tha'll get chincough in tha' knees "!! - Happy memories !!!

Gee

Gee Report 25 May 2011 19:58

Sorry Sylv

I meant they dont have to attend graduation in the UK......

Although some Unis charge extra for the certificate if you want 'First Class' or such on it

Naughty I think...they have paid for the qualification and should get recognition without extra cash.....grrrr

Dont do the living rellies just moaning at someone who already had a thread about this person...then I have had words with the said person in the past.

I think I know what thread you are talking about Gins

I have hardly done anything on the boards lately but I did give a passenger list thingy to someone yesterday and two more people gave the same info minutes after....why not delete? I do
