my niece is exactly the same. It has been a real struggle to get her to eat anything. Doctors didn't take her mother seriously because she always seems to be thriving. She is slowly getting better.

Nite Dea

Night Dea....sleep well.

Hi Toots ~~~~~~~

My daughter is very fussy about food with textures and suchlike. It's all part of her autism but it's a pain in the...............!!!

We had a friend whose son suddenly went on to eating nothing but cornflakes which was very strange.

Hey ho...beauty sleep time for me....much needed...yes, I know!

Wonder where Sylvs is?

Nothing personal Sylvs....but ....night night.. :-D

My son-i-l is like C's daughter ..... fussy about food because of the "texture" and feel in his mouth

Have to say he is a lot better now than he was when they got married, but it's still a pain!

He won't eat onions, potatoes (except as crisp French fries, aka chips) or veggies, hates stews (even when you give them a fancy French name!)

Today is their 12th anniversary.

My niece just wouldn't eat solid food and preferred cheese strings and Jam butties. When she was seven after going backwards and forwards to doctors for all those seven years it was discovered that she had abnormally large tonsils which were removed. I think as a baby it was uncomfortable for her to eat and as with everything that hurts you learn not to do it. unfortunately because it took so long to get the doctors to believe something was wrong it is very difficult to get my niece to try new foods. She is getting better and hopefully one day it wont be an issue.

It is hard to know why some children are so intolerant of nearly every food but a couple... there was this British Program on TV where this young girl had chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The eating disorders clinic were not that concerned.. but the child had reached a point where she wanted to be like the rest of her peer group. So she did start on certain things.

I worry about my grandchildren's diets, they eat too much "junk" type food no greens, carrots or fruit etc and I despair , but after watching that program I thought well they manage a lot better than others.

The hospital does not know what is wrong with Anya and came up with her stomach glands could be playing up....which I thought was a fob off. However, her mother is going to try her on gluten free.... these are the carbo kids so I guess it won't hurt if nothing else to try it.
Evan does love eggs, baked beans and he really enjoys fish, and will eat chicken and bacon. So why worry... I cooked him bacon one night and he wanted to see it to check out how much fat was on it. I thought oh no I am now going to have to cut the fat and rind off. Nope got it wrong he loves the fat and will eat the rind (yuk) but not so fussed about the meat itself.

My OH eats what he is given... just about anything goes.

Thanks Sylvs, toast for me this morning. I have an autism meeting this morning and may need the carbs to see me through :-D

Ozi, I am not too fussed on eggs but I tend to only eat the yolk unless it it s scrambled. The white bit I find rather yukky to eat.

The 'stew' business with folk on the autistic spectrum is because many of them prefer to eat their foods separately. Too many ingredients together confuses them. My daughter won't even put two foods on her fork eg potatoes/peas. As I hate cooking, meals can be a real bone of contention.

Persie, I worry about my grandchildren too and always try and make sure they have have some veg when they come to me for meals. I must say though, my son is a dab hand with roast dinners for them so they do get fresh veg then.

Toots...the tonsils thing is interesting - had never thought of that before.

I guess we all have our food preferences, but when it becomes a real problem it's time to be concerned.

Beautiful day.....washing to be done.....shoppping.....ironing and this meeting where there is always more talk than action.. :-(

That is interest Cyns... my OH eats his food separately if he can.. I think he has a gold star system and they go down in certain order... I feel like flagging them 1 2 3 etc..... He doesn't like his baked beans on his toast. When I do a spaghetti marinara he has his separated on the plate... he can't at a restaurant but will do his level best to pick out all the seafood first.

I think your tastes definitely change as you get older... I didn't eat mushrooms or asparagus when I was young and now I love them both.

I love oxtail stew, but himself is not fussed ... when I was six I had to stay with my grandmother's sister and she served up what I thought was oxtail and I dived into it and it was ghastly. But you didn't argue with her you ate what you were given. I went home and said to my father....aunty makes terrible oxtail and he told me, she would have given you boiled mutton. Thankfully I have never had it since.

I reckon that programme that you mentio Pers is 'Freaky Eaters'

A friends husband is a vegi and he only eats: frozen waffles, pizza and chips!

When he goes to his moms for dinner he takes his own cuttlery, plate and wont eat anything unless he sees her open the packet!

When he goes on holiday (three weeks at a time) he never goes to the loo for a number 2 and waits until he gets home :-0

He's well freaky if you ask me. And if any of my dinner guests turned up with their own plate....I know where I would shove it ;-)

Madam granddaughter age 6 and her 2 yr old brother are both having their tonsils out I am told...Seems its the reason that they both snore loudly and are very faddy eaters..It hurts to eat a lot of foods so as they learnt that when young it is now difficult getting them to eat anything/everything like their older brother.

My niece now age 17 was always a tiny thing and wouldnt eat much at all but raw carrot , crisps, yoghurt and chocolate mostly so in the end they let her get on with so she would at least eat something but she is still small...
She got a bad urine infection a short while back and was in hospital...
Turns out she has only one kidney and 2 wombs one of which they have had to drain as it had lots of fluid in it.....But she was never ill at all until now.....So maybe that explains her smallness...Her "little"sister towers over her.

Persephone Report 27 Jun 2011 13:14

Oh dear Fans, the poor girl, I have just been googling this fact, of two wombs. two cervixes and one kidney... there seems to be quite a few blogs on it.

I do hope she gets expert medical assistance.

I do hope that raising the awareness of autism - in all it's forms, will help to dispel the myth of 'freakiness' as it's a term which is quite offensive to those of us who love and live with those so affected.

It certainly sounds as though your friend's husband may well be on the spectrum somewhere Gins and needs advice and support for himself as well as for those whom he affects by his behaviour patterns. Why not raise the possibility in a roundabout and tactful way?

There are so many adults out in society who have never received a diagnosis because of the lack of understanding and awareness of the condition.

Persie...........autism is very much my soapbox as my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 32.

Because I understand so much about the condition, I try to help people understand that those affected are not 'freaks'. Basically, they are simply people who have a different way of looking at life and many lack basic life skills even though they may be extremely intelligent. They lack 'people' skills and are often classed as 'loners' . They often become obsessive in their behaviour patterns.......often to do with cleanliness.

Ouch......fell orf me soapbox. Sorry folks - it's just on my mind most of the time and, as I have often said to professionals.....it's one thing to WORK with autism but it's another thing having to LIVE with it!!
