.................cleaning
I have even taken orf the rads and cleaned behind them, the sitting room, sparkles and the oven & hob look brand new
The windows are also clean, as are all the doors, sinks (bogs are always clean!) and skirtings..
...............very cathartic :-D
....and there are no clothes in the laundry basket!

A question for those of you who subscribe to Ancestry.
As you are no doubt aware Ancestry has a feature called Recent Member Contact. Basically if another Ancestry member downloads a record (Census, BMD index record ect) concerning a person who you have in your tree then Ancestry lets you know. It is quite a useful feature as it can alert you to other Ancestry members who may be related to you. Similar in some ways to "Hot Matches" on GR but a bit more sophisticated and detailed.
If I get a notification I usually take a look at the other members tree to see what their relationship might be. Just recently, in the past couple of weeks or so after having looked at their tree I have found that on 4 or 5 occasions the other member has obviously been following the wrong line to end up at my ancestor. In such circumstances I usually contact the other member and point out where I feel they may have gone wrong and if possible giving them pointers as to who I believe their correct ancestor may be. Often this approach results in the other member thanking me for the advice given.
The point of telling you this is that such instances seem to be occurring ever more frequently of late and I am beginning to wonder whether it is a sign of people grasping at straws amongst records they have found online rather than being prepared to spend money obtaining BMD certificates in order to verify things.
What do you think?

Lots of people dont want to spend and thats where the problem is Jonesey...some are tight and some just cant afford it
Right from the start I bought certificates, even when I didnt know what the hell I was doing.......I knew one thing and that was, buy certificates
It was not easy for me as I did not know my grandparents names, but luckily I knew my parents names ;-)
I know that certs are expensive and not everyone has the resources so buy them......but, if you cant, then dont add the info to your tree, keep it on file until you can afford it
Each time my cousin Sean adds to his tree I get notification and have a nosey, but we have already spoken before!

Jonesy
Far too many people do not want to be bothered buying certificates.
There are people who cannot afford it ........... but many just do not want to spend any money. They are basically too cheap to spend the money, and also, to a certain extent, too cheap to spend the TIME to check things out.
So taking the information from trees, on here or on ancestry, is what they do.
It's easy to see this from postings on here ................... I'm always suggesting that one has to buy the certificate to make sure the correct family is being followed, and the response is often along the lines of "but I want to get all the information and make sure I have the correct people before I buy the certificate".
Then the same question will pop up again in a few months time, "looking for more information on 'Joe'. Can any one tell me his parents?"
I admit that I myself have taken information on my father's paternal family from two trees that are on rootsweb ................ but my cousin was the first person to put all that together, right back to 1740, back in the 1980s. I have a copy of the tree that he put together ...... it's a 20 page document, the direct line and all siblings.
I use a combination of his document, the 2 trees (which have some updated work on them as they are following different siblings from our side), and my own checking online. Nothing goes into my tree unless I have myself have found confirmation.
I have got all possible certificates for my direct line. Now the Parish Records are providing more confirmation for pre-1837.
Cousin got everything right ............... no-one has since disproved what he did back then, embellished yes, chased up information on siblings who emigrated to the US or Australia yes. Even I have found extra information on some of those. But the direct line is unchanged.
I have proved that my gt gt grandfather was married 3 times, and that his daughter (my gt grandmother) was the child of his 2nd wife ........ everyone else except my cousin believed she was the child of the 3rd wife.
Certificates helped!
........... and still, no-one can find out how the guy who married in 1740 got to that village, or where or when he was born!

And then, of course, there are the 'Name Collectors' !!!
Those people who strive to add many thousands of names to their tree, going back hundreds and hundreds of years.
They just think the bigger it is the better it is and don't really mind if it is not correct.
I held one branch of my husband's family on a seperate tree for almost 3 years, even though I was sure it was correct. I just could not find the 'proof' that I needed so could not bring myself to join it on.
The proof DID eventually present itself and I was very pleased to connect it up.
I, like many on here want to be as certain as it is possible to be before I add anyone on.
I find no joy in just adding 'name connections' and building up a giant tree if it may have errors in it.
However, we are not all the same.
I have had people contact me in the past with 'the wrong connection' and I have researched 'their person' and tried to find where they have gone wrong - they are usually extremely grateful.

A 2nd cousin who I knew quite well when I was a child, contacted me about a year ago and asked why I had George as our gt gt grandfather as she had William. I told her because he is mentioned on our gt grandparents marriage cert, which can be viewed on Ancestry.
Year later she has not changed it nor has she even followed up the fact that James (gt grandfather) was born 1859 and the other James 1852 who's baptism she has attached to her tree???

Jonesey, I would just add.....and some just can be 'bovvered'...they'll just take info from other's trees cos it's easy! They probably don't even think of whether the info is right or not....... :-S
Lainie.......are you on about Watched threads? I regularly get ordinary emails and pms - no probs. :-S
