I know I'm late to the party, but ...

"I am not a chauvinist and certainly see no harm in females following those career paths if that is their desire but in years gone by I cannot recall females earning their living in similar occupations out of choice. I know that during wartime females were inducted into many occupations that had traditionally been considered male preserves because of the physicality involved but once peace was restored they usually reverted to the more traditional female roles."

And I say I pontificate ...

No, they didn't revert.

They were fired. And they weren't hired into such "masculine", *well-paid* jobs again for a few decades.

And when they got good ladylike jobs, they were fired when they got married.

Honestly, yes, women just make these fool decisions all by ourselves with no outside influence, let alone coercion ...

I have women friends who are carpenters, for example. And a couple who are clergy. Not to mention lawyers.

All of them forced into those jobs, I'm sure, when they'd rather be doing some proper lady job.

And why anyone finds it appropriate to refer to women as "females", I have yet to figure out. I quite enjoyed watching a judge toake a cop to task for that in court one day quite some years ago.

The Owens one --

"says on there previously Discharged 1908
Demobilized 1919"

Not too unusual I think, lots would have re-enrolled or been called back up for WWI.

My grf was discharged in 1908 but was in again for WWI. But then he was discharged with ignominy and enrolled again a year later under a fake name ... and stayed in until 1925ish. Can't wait for those records to get released, but his will probably be among the missing ones.

Just doing a look up, and came across this on the 1891 Census

James Marsh, where born NK, relationship NK, occupation NK

and there was this note neatly written in

"occupation not known. Slept here Sunday night goes away Monday mornings. Could get his information put here up to 13/4/91"

never seen that before!

Hi JC,

Which dictionary do you prefer to use, Websters, the Oxford or some other? They all seem to give a very similar definition.

Revert (Verb) To return to a previous state , practice, topic, etc.

Sorry that you and the judge cannot figure it out why anyone finds it appropriate to refer to women as "females". I always thought that was exactly what they were. Perhaps all those female voice choirs should be called womens voice choirs. ;-)

In the words of Victor Meldrew

I DONT believe it :D

Congratulations Fanny. Finding anything definite about someone in Wales called Evans can only be regarded as a minor miracle.
